_There is a light side and a dark side to my thesis, how does activities correlate with this??
_What does one do in the light that they wouldn't do in the dark, and vice versa??
_Or what kinds of activities can be supported through each, light and dark, the grey matter in between??
These are the questions I chose to ask myself, which I hope will guide me in my decisions.
Thesis statement... as of now...
Through the fusion of the immaterial and the material architecture I would like to choreograph an experience of multiple layers to suggest a transparency of time, space, memory and feeling. Through this choreographed experience the boundaries of and within architecture are confusing and therefore not defined, but a difference between spaces can be determined. One can be immersed within the public or private realms, or the space in between where visual and physical connections can be perceived.
a way to think of program, an experiential walk through/ narrative... each statement or group of statements coincides with an image, as shown in the picture featured below...
Approaching the built environment, you wonder about its ability to be a physical structure
Once inside, there is confusion as to what the boundaries are within this built environment. A visual transparency turns the world into a reassuring place.
Immersed within the public realm, the space is flooded with light, from the sky above. It’s as if one has not quite been inside yet. Meanwhile there are people watching from above, from below, but you don’t know because it’s not a concern at least for now, it’s the nature of being.
On route, one begins to watch and to perceive the space in which they’re traveling, touching surfaces to see if they’re real, something tangible.
Wandering within the in between space, one can see the progression from public to private where translucency dulls and the shadow overcomes the light. One can stay within the layers of the public realm or switch to layers of the private experiencing the in between as they make their decision.
Amongst the shadows, a light shining down catches the eyes. As one gets closer, due to their curiosity, they notice it’s from above, but how and why?
Through this opening some people can be seen and their inaudible voices heard
In the near distance, lights are trickling out from a wall, your eyes are trying to adjust, but the cone of vision is limited, you have to put the pieces together
Just as the shadows were getting unbearable and your own thoughts were taking over your mind, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, you return to the public realm, there’s no more concern for the individual.
Somehow you are not where you once started, but you’re able to gain insight as you relax and drink coffee that you’ve just purchased from the hole in the wall.
program statement... as of now... kinda lengthy...
When I think of program for my thesis, I envision a layering of programmatic spaces that are connected to a central area where one can reflect on where they’ve traveled throughout this built environment and the possibilities of where they can venture next. The central area does not necessarily need to be centralized, but resemble a common ground and/or reference point that can be localized for the whole program.
Thus two areas are formed, one the reference point and the other as the surrounding spaces, which are contrasting conditions. The way-finder will be completely immersed in either or after experiencing the transitional space, the space in between. The space in between is known as the transitional space as well as the main circulation path, the grey matter. Circulation blends into the public and private realms, so it’s not limited to one straight path, but a blending of an area. This is to create something that enhances social interaction where circulation becomes a space that envelops all other spaces. It is the space where chance encounters happen and where this continuous common space is physically or visually connected in space.
On one side of the ‘in between’ is the private realm and on the other is the public realm. The public realm is described as something full of natural light where transparency and immateriality confuse the boundaries of architecture. A person can only understand and experience as they physically perceive the space, it cannot be done from a distance. The private realm, the opposite end of the spectrum, is flooded with shadow where hints of light appear and disappear. This space is where the individual can think of him or her self. It is a place of solitude and separation from the rest of society.
Immateriality is the absence of matter, to fuse the material and the immaterial will produce areas of clarity and of ambiguity. I want a multilayered experience that suggests a transparency of time, space, memory and feeling.
Presentation for today on Program: first thoughts, circulation, adjacencies...
For now these images are photos, but they will be scanned and at a better quality, but for now this is what I have to represent my work.
