immaterial studies...

For my first review, Thursday- February 3rd, I wanted to define what I consider to be immaterial.  So what better way to do that then to do material studies.  I selected a bunch of materials that have an immaterial quality, absence of matter and the ability to transform from its natural state.  To keep it all organized and upright, Rick, my boyfriend, helped make this possible, he constructed a box to house it all.  So, pretty much the day before the review I had a material photo shoot in my apartment because up until that day I had been collecting the materials and researching the work of Kengo Kuma.  I was able to produce many many photos, which I then narrowed down to quite a bunch, representing different qualities/properties of what I consider to be immaterial.  The three images below show the lovely arrangement and housing box of my immaterials, there's really no rhyme or reason to their placement, but as long as they're in the box I appreciate them.

color- changes light quality | changes perception of original material | reveals texture
reflection- surroundings seen on a shiny surface | creates an unclear image
permeability- layers of a porous material | altered due to flexibility | allows light to pass through
glass- lacking clarity | rounded surface | distorts the image | reflects and refracts
ice to water- changes states | temporary | glass-like quality
light- creates shadow | contrast | shines through any opportunity | produces texture

the following image is comprised of (3)- 24x36 portrait boards
